From Zero To One Of The Most Admired Brands In Social
Customers of Dunkin’ Donuts tend to see Dunkin’ as part of their everyday lives, but six years ago the brand wasn’t even on social media, a large part of their customers’ lives. Over those six years Studiocom has partnered with Dunkin’ and taken an inbound, fan-centric approach to social and grown to one of the most admired and widely-covered social brands online. In this session we’ll look at the Dunkin’ social strategy, answer the question of how to go from zero to hero, and dive into what it means to let your fans dictate what your brand really is.

Social media isn’t as scary as it once was. The platform is proven and brands have succeeded in harnessing the power of social communities to increase sales, conversation, and engagement with their customers. Using Beggin’ Strips as an example, we’ll discuss the process of building a page and community from scratch to a successful social brand. We’ll examine the challenges of working with an audience outside of the purchaser demographic, the curation of content, and finding success on a tight budget. We’ll answer how to go from puppy to big dog on social media.

Digital Atlanta's Physical to Digital Hackathon
The age of smart objects, sometimes called the "Internet of Things" or "Ubiquitous Computing," is coming and it has big implications for companies and for marketers. Sensors and new technologies will bring the internet into the environment in elegant and useful ways. Join a team of expert hardware hackers/technologists/designers as we hack up prototypes that will digitally augment the conference area. Facilitators will help you to create working prototypes based on sensors, LEDs, motors and small screens. This hands-on workshop, full of creativity, concepting, story-telling, coding and building will run from 10-4, with a break for lunch.

Join a team to:
  • Create wearable computing prototypes - What is after Google Glass?
  • Create smart things - What will smart chairs, smart tables, smart doors, or even smart drink coasters do for you and your brands?
  • Design and create co-working desk robot that makes it easy to see who's hard and work and who's up for a chat
  • Measure and display the busyness of the conference via door-based sensors as well as wifi-measurements
  • Some other top-secret ideas, too!

You don't need experience (though that's good too — we'll be using Processing, Wiring, and Arduino). All you need is the desire to make something cool. Remember, "the best way to predict the future is to invent it."

Words that Work: How to Craft Messages that Deliver Capital, Earn Headlines and Build Buzz
Digital entrepreneurs often struggle to clearly and effectively communicate their concepts. Whether it's a VC pitch, an interview with a reporter or simply writing a decent tweet, many start-ups suffer from confusing and contradictory messaging.

Jon offers 5 powerful rules for discovering the words that work and shares a simple day-to-day plan for putting them to use. Citing examples from emerging start-ups in travel, gaming, retail and more, Jon explains how every start-up should:

1. Start with purpose
2. Remember that people are interesting (and everything else is not)
3. Tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end
4. Listen to your conversation partner
5. Reduce, re-use and recycle

Jon also explains how to put these principles in action by walking through a day in the life of a busy start-up CEO.

The presentation:

- Identifies common causes of bad messaging
- Defines benchmarks for success
- Delivers concrete, actionable advice that any participant can put into effect immediately

Evolving the Customer Lifecycle in a Social Media World
I will speak about the evolving Customer Lifecycle model, in a Social Media world. Many of our clients (some of the biggest firms in the world) still use the traditional model of Awareness->Selection->Trial->Adoption->Repeat. However, the advent of Social Media has made this model ineffective and in dire need of overhaul, as the boundaries between stages are blurred or even removed.

Edelman is leading an approach to Consumer Engagement that addresses this evolving consumption model, and adapts Social Media best practices to this new Customer Lifetime Value approach.

I propose to speak about the new model, common pitfalls in marketing to consumers, and ways to adjust Marketing Tactics and Campaigns to better serve the new model.

Fireside Chat: Everyday Leadership
It all starts with a great idea. Then, a business plan, a few key hires and a successful project. Suddenly, you’re fast tracking toward becoming leader. But what exactly does that mean? In a marketplace guided by speed to market and innovation, to be a leader means being equal parts visionary and tactician. How do you do that? Two Atlanta entrepreneurs will come together to try and answer that question. Jeff Hilimire, co-founder of Atlanta-based Engauge, sold his company to Publicis Groupe in September. He’s now launched a new company, Dragon Army. Danny Davis, an original Engauge partner, moved on to form Proving Ground. Between the two of them, they’ve seen the ups and downs of growing a business, building a team and winning business, right here in Atlanta and nationwide. In this intimate conversation, they’ll share what it means to lead everyday — their experience in the tech and marketing space, the lessons they’ve learned and what they’d tell new companies just starting out.

Portfolio Optimization - How Savvy Search Marketers Are Taking Control in an Enhanced Campaign World
Search network traffic constitutes almost 50% of delivery to AdWords advertisers, yet Google restricts optimizations to the keyword level. With Enhanced Campaigns, Google further restricts an advertiser's ability to target, grouping together tablets and desktop users, while opting in all advertisers to smartphone traffic. Fortunately, with SEM tools, tag management systems and alternative networks, advertisers can optimize their marketing dollars across a variety of channels in an efficient, real-time process. Come learn how the savviest marketers are retaining control in an enhanced campaign world.

More purchases than ever are conducted start to finish on digital channels, but rarely on a single device. With every jump from smartphone to tablet to desktop made in the course of a single purchase, brands and merchants risk losing customers to competitors.  The solution is to think in terms of multi-screen. The panel will discuss how to address the mobile shopping cart challenge by embracing the consumer’s proclivity for multiscreen behavior.

Digital Art Party
Each year Digital Atlanta hosts an event that highlights the intersection of art and technology. This year, we're stepping it up a notch and partnering with WonderRoot to showcase local artists' digital works and interactive media! Projects will aim to activate, enliven and interact with the audience of Digital Atlanta, who will then have a chance to vote for their favorite piece. The digital arts showcase will seek to create connections between the arts community and the technology and design communities to share influence of the creative class in our city.

Come out for an electrifying night of digital art as we party long into the night!

Virginia Byers and Aria Ritz Finkelstein - Automatic Drawing
Mixed media
Automatic Drawing is one project within a series of experiments investigating the use of small electronics and open source programming as research, drawing, and construction tools. Specifically, it harnesses a self-navigating quadcopter as a painting tool.

Andrew Quitmeyer, Ava Ansari, Michael Nitsche, Digital World and Image Group, The Back Room, and Anonymous Iranian Performers - Subway
Android Camera Library, Adobe After Effects
The Subway project digitally joins performers and activists from Atlanta and New York with participants in Teheran to digitally circumvent restrictive laws against dancing in Iran. Together, they create a new hybrid performance spanning the digital and physical boundaries of three cities. The piece uses digital technology to break a dance video documentation into individual frames, which become the basis for a cell phone application that allows performers in Iran to re-enact individual poses. Finally, each pose is sent back and re-assembled in the documentation of the shared event.

Mary Stuart Hall - Thinking of you thinking of me
Max MSP software with X-Box Kinect as a sensory
An interactive video installation, Thinking of you thinking of me, seeks to engage conference participants and the general public to explore the permeable boundary between viewer and content generator.  When the viewer approaches the TV screen they will see a live image of themselves but scrolling text will appear above their heads.  The X-Box Kinect delivers the live image of the viewer and senses when a face is present.  When a face, or multiple faces, are present, scrolling text will appear above their heads.  The text in the thought bubble is from John Dewey’s essay on qualitative thought.  Thinking of you thinking of me invites viewers to engage in the installation and provides a catalyst to reach beyond the conference and construct their own meaning, knowledge and experience.

A year ago, we were in a bad place. High employee turnover and low morale. Flawed internal development processes and inconsistent quality in our work. Almost overnight, that changed with one key implementation in our culture: teamwork. In this session, I'll cover how cross-functional teams and agile development increase innovation, quality, customer satisfactions and employee morale. I'll discuss:
-Values and how to create them in an organization
-Rally your team behind these values
-Benefits of cross-functional teams
I'll explain how these changes, The Circle Strategy, can ignite a similar breakthrough for other digital agencies and organizations.

The news media is evolving, and so should your PR approach
Today, more Americans obtain news from the Internet than print and radio outlets, and nearly 20% of consumers obtain news via social media.  Further, journalist layoffs have scaled newsrooms back by 30% - placing added constraints on reporting. As traditional news outlets race to digital platforms to harness online ad revenue and readership, brands must adapt to a new PR approach. This session will teach you how to create a press release that dominates search engines, how to communicate with reporters in the digital age, and how to develop shareable PR content.

Creating a Contextually Relevant World
In a time when the phrase "Content is King" has been completely worn out, it's time to reset and go back to good old-fashioned storytelling. Technology, devices and the Internet have created a dynamic environment for developing a brand story – but they’ve also created a tendency to over-engineer advertising. From Facebook profiles to TV spots, the most powerful campaigns – regardless of fancy technology or whizz-bang code – are the ones that have the strongest context for the audience. Learn from a veteran content strategist about how the only true strategic need is context – which makes every story scalable and relevant.

Board Games to Big Ideas: How Games We Played Growing Up Can Help Us Build Better Teams, Develop Smarter Strategies
Ever tried to Connect 4 ideas together to make a 360° campaign? Do you know your objective but don't have a Clue where to start, or do you think your team's got a Monopoly on great ideas? Ok, enough with the puns. Everybody played board games growing up; they're where we learned some of our earliest lessons about teamwork and strategy. And, surprisingly, a lot of the concepts we learned back then are still applicable to the creative world we live in today. In this session, 22squared Digital Design Director Dan Brown will discuss how "gamifying" the creative process can breathe new life into brainstorming sessions, help us learn from our losses and develop winning strategies for our clients. After all, in the agency world, it is about whether you win or lose but it's also about how you play the game.

Lessons Learned from the Final Four
The 2013 NCAA® Men’s Final Four® in Atlanta had the highest attendance in event history with nearly 150,000 residents and visitors participating in events from April 5 – 8. Digital media played an unprecedented role in this year’s event, particularly in promoting events happening beyond the two semi-final and championship games. As head of marketing for the Final Four, our challenge was to create compelling messages for Atlanta residents first, and basketball fans and visitors second, that would drive awareness of and participation in all of the activities surrounding the Final Four games. From the Big Dance Concert Series to the ultimate fan fest, Bracket Town, to a 5K race, and for the first time the Division II and III Men’s final championship games in the same host city.  The digital mix for this large scale event included many firsts - a highly interactive smartphone app, a hyper-local website, a six-month campaign for social media engagement on multiple platforms, email marketing, a social media command center, onsite social media street teams, and a unique mix of online contests and promotions – all throughout Final Four weekend.

Results included:
6,800 Facebook fans
4,300 Twitter followers
183,230 website pageviews

Why how you define failure matters
Too often in startup culture, founders attempt to mimic the success of other companies.

The problem is, no matter how detailed the road map, your success is specific to you, your team, and the resources you had available at the time of launch.  What I can do though, is learn from your mistakes, because mistakes are unfortunately repeatable (over and over again by different people in the exact same ways).

So rather than shun discussing how we have 'failed,' why not change how we view failure so that it is something that empowers the startup community in Atlanta.
